A thread repair insert is a fastener used to fix a damaged thread or strengthen a weakened stripped thread while keeping the same diameter. Also, thread inserts provide strong threads in soft materials like plastic and aluminum. In addition, thread repair inserts can allow a metric threaded hole to hold imperial fasteners and also allow imperial holes to hold metric fasteners. The most common type of thread repair insert is a helical-shaped insert, commonly known as Helicoil. When the insert is placed in a threaded hole, the coil expands to hold the insert in place.
